I was encouraged a while ago by my friend Ryan Rosenberg during lunch one day downtown to look in depth into stats for our local school district, and admittedly, I didn’t hop on it when we spoke, as I believed his positive outlook towards our schools is warranted.
In a web search recently for some information unrelated to stats, I came across EWRSD as rated #6 in Mercer County on Niche.com. I wanted to share this as a result. I thought some of it was interesting, as I’m a numbers guy with my line of work. I think stats definitely are relevant, but there’s always a human element.
The district is rated one of the most diverse in the state while standardized testing is just above average, with all students, one thing I personally am mindful of is, not to ignore the reality that with diversity and a great offering of not only standardized curriculum and AP educational resources, but also resources for those who need extra help. Personally, I believe being able to cater to everyone, and not just top performers when it comes to publicly funded schools is an overall positive thing. Not all students will test as those who are able to accelerate. We also are home to folks who do not speak English natively, yet our district has always had a great ESL program as long as I can recall (dating back to the late 80s). I’m not sure how NJ accounts for that if at all in its standard testing assessments, but if anyone has verified input, please comment or DM me. I’d be interested to see how it’s considered if at all.
As a full time Realtor, I help clients all
over the state transacting with buyers and sellers alike. Although it’s not rare for me to be out on the road for a 100+ mile day to help certain clients, and it’s given me invaluable knowledge about different parts of the state other agents won’t venture to, I literally live on Main Street of where I call my hometown. I’m proud my daughter is able to walk the halls of the high school I graduated from where I met wonderful people who I still call my friends to this day.
When working residental sales and reviewing homes with buyers, I’m often asked while helping clients buy in Hightstown/East Windsor, what about the school district? Is it any good? Overall, I can say I currently have a positive experience, and nothing is ever perfect anywhere you go. The experience anywhere is going to have much to do with your involvement and influence as a parent. Likewise, your child’s effort, commitment, limits, and likewise their experience with peers. Also, the staff’s strengths and weaknesses alike along with their willingness to work with your family. Interactions, relationships, involvement, commitment and effort are all paramount to success in anything in life. We as families and most of all parents would be fooling to put this solely on the back of teachers expecting a great score to spit out on a report card. I’ve always believed this as long as I’ve had a kid in school.
These are all moving parts outside of curriculum and standardized test scores you can’t precisely measure on a macro level. It’s one of the reasons I hate standardized ratings. There will always be a human element to things, and it’s one of the reasons I take pride in the way I interact with and help my clients. Likewise, it’s one of the reasons my daughter’s public educatiors and administrators are probably sick of my emails and phone calls when I get involved with something.
EWRSD is not the only school district I’ve dealt with as a student or a parent. Believe me, I’m not biased, and anyone who know’s me will tell you, I have no reservations with being honest to a fault. Likewise, my daughter has attended another district that was “rated” higher than East Windsor Regional School District, and I won’t name names, but I can tell you, the rating didn’t speak to the experience.
When you look in a town based on its public education offering, your real estate agent isn’t trying to be difficult or dismissive if they encourage you to research it. It’s a very personal and important decision for parents. I can overwhelmingly relate to this. I’m going to make it a point to compile a few resources I think are helpful out of a desire to better help everyone and my colleagues alike. I’ll keep you all posted if it’s something you think may help you or someone you care about. If you’re curious before I put I list out, please feel free to call, text or message me about any questions with what I’m talking about here.
With all that said, I was researching things to do with how the local district works here for certain things to do with resources for my daughter. When I am interested in something, anyone who knows me will tell you, I need to deep dive and know EVERYTHING I can soak up. I came across this one site that seems to be an information aggregate. However, they do have some good tools and reviews. I pulled up EWRSD and any member of it along with parents and students alike should be proud to see this. The district based on this site ranks 6th in Mercer county while also touting some worth mentioning remarks. There’s definitely negative remarks. You will always find those anywhere you look. I’m a big believer in, it’s more about what you do once you’re aware of a problem. What did you do to make it right and put a system in place to make it right. Most of all, give credit where credit is due, and keep up the good work while continuing to make a push for progress folks. Our children are the future.
