🇺🇲 SB Waterfront Celebration (11AM – 9:30PM): Jam to live bands, browse the beachside street fair, and grab local eats at West Beach. The massive 20-minute fireworks show over the ocean starts at 9:00 PM!

💡 What caused the curious twists and turns in Santa Barbara’s historic streets?

Ever wonder why some of Santa Barbara’s streets suddenly bend in ways that feel a little unusual? 🤔 It traces back to 1851, when coastal captain and surveyor Salisbury Haley laid out the city using a survey chain patched together with rawhide strips.

That improvised material absorbed moisture during chilly morning fog and contracted under afternoon heat, causing measurements to shift throughout the day. Those inconsistencies unintentionally created oversized blocks and irregular intersections that still define much of Santa Barbara’s original street pattern.

Complicating matters further, existing adobe homes already stood within portions of the proposed grid, and resistance from property owners forced surveyors to adjust roadways around them. The result became one of Santa Barbara’s most distinctive characteristics: a street layout filled with subtle bends and historic irregularities that continue to shape the city’s character.
