WHY DID WE REPLACE THE BEAM?
When I received a check from insurance to have the floors refinished due to water damage, I decided it was time to FINALLY replace the beam in my living room that had dealt me misery for years. Every time I repaired a crack in the ceiling, one would appear again.
Why was there a beam? Prior purchasing my house, a support wall was removed. My living area is very open which is not common for a house built in 1960. The 26+ foot beam was added to take the place of the support wall.
Take a look at the original beam. These were the problems: (1) sitting on top of the joists, (2) center metal plate and wood was multiple pieces which makes it weak, (3) metal rods attached to roof line to pull up the beam which was not working and caused stress on the roof, (4) it would not pass an inspection. The pile of wood on my front porch was about half of what we removed from my attic to remove the old beam and apparatus. It was a mess! (Click on the photos to see details.)
The next post will show how we replaced this beam. Stay tuned!
I’ve had a few people say they can’t wait to see the finished product. Me too! The floors in my bedroom will be refinished this weekend. I will definitely share when it’s all done. I cannot wait to have my house back!!
