I’ve helped families say goodbye to their homes but I wasn’t prepared for the echo of my own empty kitchen.
I’m currently standing in my kitchen, getting the final details ready for this house to hit the market.
Even though this house spent a chapter as a rental, standing in these empty rooms today brought everything rushing back. The echoes are loud, and to most people, this looks like a "blank canvas." But when I opened this tiny cabinet to do a final check, I didn't see an empty space.
I saw a memory.
That little space was my son’s favorite hiding spot when we lived here. It’s where he’d sneak his milk, where he thought he was invisible, and where so many of our family "firsts" happened. It didn't matter that it served as a rental since then. To me, it will always be the place he took his first steps and said his first words.
Standing here today, I’m feeling that familiar tug-of-war my clients always talk about. It’s the mixed emotions of being excited for the future while feeling the quiet ache of saying a final goodbye to a chapter of your life.
