We firmly believe that buying a house at a young age is one of the absolute best things you can do. Will owning a house make you “rich?” Of course not. But it lays a financial foundation where every month you’re building equity in SOMETHING. This is not insignificant.

Making progress towards a goal is addicting (in a good way), and it eventually shows up in other areas of your life. The younger you learn this, the better. That's why we are so proud of our son Ben, who purchased 2 homes before the age of 30!

More important than the money itself is the mindset this habit unlocks.

Every goal in life worth pursuing is going to take a long time….and it’s going to require ongoing consistency more than temporary intensity. Too many people are trying to get rich quick when they should be focused on getting rich slowly.

In any endeavor, the price of success is usually just doing the same boring things over and over again….that most people aren’t willing to do. This is what creates results in the gym, in business, and ultimately in life.

This is why cultivating the emotional discipline to pay a monthly mortgage is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

It’s more than a mortgage, it’s about the type of person it helps you to become.

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Jim Ahmed, who owns The Clockworks here in Richmond.

Jim has been fixing clocks and watches for 40 years and has been featured in various Richmond publications, so it was a real pleasure to spend some time with him. The reason for my visit is that I have inherited a Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos clock and have been carting it all over Richmond for decades.

Heather and I are starting the process of downsizing, and getting rid of things is our top priority. This clock has not worked for a very long time and is very valuable when it does. We don’t need more things taking up space, so I went to Jim to inquire about fixing it or selling it. He had 5 of the very same clocks that he was working on for various people, and wanted mine for parts. Some things we hold on to for sentimental value, but this clock had no real meaning to me, so Jim made me a deal that I couldn’t refuse.

I suggest just stopping by to chat with Jim and letting him show you his store – you will be amazed!

I don't celebrate Memorial Day. Here's why: It's not a day for celebration, it's a day to honor everyone who traded their tomorrows for my today. It's a day for me to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This is specifically different than Veterans Day or Independence Day. So, here are three ways to observe Memorial Day if you live in the Richmond area:

- Attend the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Virginia War Memorial or Memorial Day remembrance at Pamplin Historical Park in Petersburg.

- Watch movies that honor their heroism, like Saving Private Ryan or Devotion.

- Finally, enjoy dinner together with your family. Because some gave everything for us to have this privilege.

I recently visited the Arlington National Cemetery, where over 400,000 servicemen and women have been laid to rest. It was an overwhelming experience, and I encourage you to visit one day. The tomb of the Unknown Soldier memorial is here, where they still change guard on the hour 365 days a year.

Memorial Day is the ultimate reminder of what “boots on the ground” really means. To those heroes, Thank You.

Home inspections are rarely the direct cause of a failed transaction.
More often, it is how inspection findings are interpreted and managed that determines the outcome.
Clear communication and context are critical during this stage.

Crawl space conditions are one of the most common findings in Richmond home inspections.
Moisture, insulation concerns, and ventilation issues often appear, but many can be addressed with the right approach.
Understanding the context is key to making informed decisions.
