Winter is here and with the cool down comes frigid temperatures, blowing snow, and freezing ice that can cause a variety of concerns with home heating. To help keep your house warm and efficient this season, follow these easy tips so you aren't left out in the cold this winter:
- Replace your furnace air filter every 1-6 months, depending on the size of your filter, to allow for proper airflow. Filters 1 inch in size should be replaced every 1-3 months, while thicker 4 inch filters can last 3-6 months. With pets in the home, be sure to check filters more frequently!
- Make sure all vents are cleared indoors and outside. Keep furniture and other items from blocking your vents inside and check your outdoor vents frequently for any snow or ice build up. This allows for better airflow and proper heating throughout your home.
- Test your home alarms, including smoke and CO detectors to ensure that any emergencies are detected promptly. Replace batteries at least once a year to prevent detector failure.
- Have your furnace, boiler, or tankless heating system serviced every 1-2 years to guarantee proper operation and prevent breakdowns when the temperatures are dangerously low.
