NEWS RELEASE: Carteret County launches free service to help residents fight property fraud

CARTERET COUNTY, NC – Carteret County now has a Recording Notification Service (RNS) that notifies county property owners when a real estate document has been recorded in their name with the Register of Deeds Office. Members of the public can sign up for the service on the Register of Deeds website.

Once registered, the subscriber will receive an email alert notification each time a document has been recorded in their name in the Register of Deeds Office. This email will give the recording time and date, instrument number, and book and page. The public can then go to the public access link, http://deeds.carteretcounty.com/, where they will be able to search the instrument number or book and page to see the image of the recorded document. This will allow them to see if this is a fraudulent recording. To sign up for the alerts, go to https://www.carteretcountync.gov/162/Register-of-Deeds, click Recording Notification Service.

Every season the headlines warn us of the dangers of rip currents. Please stay diligent and share the dangers with newcomers and seasoned swimmers alike.

9 Aug 2022// TWO NEAR-TRAGIC INCIDENTS YESTERDAY IN THE OCEAN

Ladies and Gents,

Yesterday the Fire/EMS crew had two separate water rescue incidents. Six swimmers were involved and one was hospitalized. Fortunately no lives were lost.

There are lessons learned here that are worth passing along.

In the first rescue 3 swimmers were caught in a rip in the center of PKS near The Inn. The mother was furthest out and could not get to shore. She had a boogie board as a flotation device and was picked up by our crew on the rescue jet ski. Two others were closer and were brought to shore by swimmers. None could beat the rip and make it ashore on their own.

In the second incident near the Beach Walk condominium, 3 young adults were caught in a very wide and strong rip. Our best swimmer on the FD rescue team said it was the largest and strongest rip current he had ever seen. None of these people had flotation of any kind. When our jet ski made it out to two of these individuals one was near complete exhaustion and had difficulty getting himself on the recue board. The other individual had to be hospitalized after ingesting sea water.

Lesson #1---There is no reason for anyone but the experienced ocean swimmer to go into the ocean without some means of flotation. The mother in the first rescue event may not be with us today had she not taken that boogie board in the water with her. The exhausted swimmer in the second incident, according to our jet ski operator, was close to slipping under the water.

Lesson #2---Every person going into the water should learn to recognize a rip current. There is no shortage of images of rip currents for people to examine. One is below. The very easy rule is this: if you see a break in the surf, where the water is relatively flat with breakers to the left and right of the calm/flat area, there is a good chance that there is a rip current there.
