EMERALD ISLE — After numerous speakers urged them to retain the current beach-driving season of Sept. 15 to April 30, Emerald Isle commissioners agreed Tuesday night.

“NCDOT has begun surface level repairs on the Emerald Isle bridge. Please note that traffic delays may occur.

Improvements and repairs to a Carteret County bridge will resume and are expected to last for several months.

N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will close one of two lanes of the bridge to Emerald Isle, beginning sometime in January 2021. Contractors will use flaggers at the ends of the work zone to direct traffic.

Weekend closures can be expected between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., while weekday closures can be expected between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The lane closure will allow contractors to continue rehab work, which extends the life of the bridge. Drivers should expect a lane closure to last through March 2021.

Motorists should use caution while crews are working and allow themselves more time than normal to reach their destinations.

NC 58 Bridge Construction Update

The NC Department of Transportation informed the Town of Emerald Isle that construction related lane closures (of the N.C 58 bridge) are delayed until December 1, 2020.

Please plan ahead when traveling on and off the island via the NC 58 Bridge:
• Weekday closures can occur between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
• Saturday and Sunday closures can occur between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM.
At this time, single lane closures are anticipated to occur on the following dates:
• December 1 through December 17, 2020.
• Following the Christmas and New Year's holidays, single lane closures will resume once more and continue through March of 2021.
