18 years ago I went to meet a man named Ron about selling some land in the mountains. On the phone we had agreed to a price of $599,000, which according to my research was $200,000 too much. But he was dating my mom, and land isn’t much work, so I figured it was okay. When I arrived, Ron said he now wanted $795,000. I had driven an hour to get there so I acquiesced, and took the listing at double what I thought it was worth.
Last month we finally closed the sale of that land. There was a gap when Ron passed away, until his son contacted me to relist, and the acreage grew when we added the two adjacent lots Ron had owned. But I had that land listed in one form or another for over 14 years. You see, Ron didn't really want to sell the land, but if someone gave him his price, he would have let it go. His son didn't have the same attitude, he lived hundreds of miles away and was ready to let it go.
I'm posting this now because Ron's son wrote a review on Realtor.com. I don't normally post our reviews, although we have 150+ on Redfin, but I thought this sale deserved one.

Adventures in real estate: I recently showed some of my favorite clients (they've done six transactions with me) an eccentric property in Aptos. After many minutes up a windy, sometimes one-lane road, we arrived at this interesting home. Besides having both bedrooms accessible only by leaving the main home, it had the most out-of-level floor I've ever seen in a home. There was a crown in the center of the living room that was at least 6" higher than the edges of the room. It was surrounded my massive redwoods, one whose trunk was in a downstairs closet. The price, just $499k, reflected the "uniqueness" of the place.
