Today we’re taking a moment to celebrate the rich history of 123 Pleasant Street — a true Morgantown landmark! 📍
🏠 From Homes to Hub:
Originally built in 1891 as part of the “Brick Row Building,” 123 Pleasant Street was among the earliest major apartment buildings in downtown Morgantown, offering housing during a time of rapid growth as the city expanded with the railroad and college.
🛍️ Transformation into Business:
In the early 1920s, the building was remodeled — porch steps were removed, street-level storefronts added, and shops such as clothing stores, markets, and even the region’s first radio store opened here.
🎸 A Center for Music & Culture:
By the 1980s, the space had taken on a new life as The Underground Railroad, a music venue that became a heart of Morgantown’s underground music scene — welcoming artists and audiences from all walks of life and fostering local talent.
🎤 Rebirth as 123 Pleasant Street:
After years of changing businesses and venues — and even facing condemnation in the late 1990s — the building was lovingly restored and reopened in 1998 as 123 Pleasant Street, continuing the legacy of live music and community connection it holds today.
🎵 Legacy of Live Music:
For nearly three decades, 123 Pleasant Street has hosted local, regional, and national artists across genres — from rock and punk to jazz, folk, and beyond — helping shape Morgantown’s vibrant cultural scene and serving as a gathering place for creative expression.
