Still need a lot more rain...

🌧️ Rainfall over the weekend brought some welcome relief, but drought conditions across northeast and central Florida remain severe.

While many areas received rain, a single weather event cannot make up for months of significant rainfall deficits. πŸ“Š In northeast Florida, nearly 31 inches of rainfall over the next three months would be needed to eliminate current drought conditions.

πŸ’§ Residents, businesses, and large water users are encouraged to continue conserving water and follow all mandatory and voluntary watering restrictions currently in place.

Every drop counts as we work together to protect Florida’s water resources.

Lightning Alert -Ocala National Forest

May 23, 2026 8:30 pm

The south end of the Ocala National Forest is experiencing extreme lightning.

At least four wildfires were sparked by the storm. Two fires are located north of Altoona, west of state road 19 and two were quickly knocked back by Lake County Fire Rescue.

Although there is significant rainfall more ignitions may occur. Residents in and near the Ocala National Forest should remain vigilant in the event of any new wildfire starts.

Call 911 if you see fire or smoke not associated with existing wildfires.

There have been multiple vehicle-caused fires on the Ocala National Forest this spring. This is a friendly reminder on how to prevent wildfires when driving, working or recreating on public lands.

🚫 Forest visitors are reminded that it is against the law to operate motorized vehicles off of designated roads and trails. Violators will be prosecuted and may face a $5,000 fine, and have their vehicle confiscated. Additionally, violators may be financially responsible for all fire suppression costs.

Follow these simple actions to prevent and help reduce human-caused wildfires:

πŸš— VEHICLES
βœ… Avoid parking, driving or idling a vehicle or all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on dry grass, brush or weeds as it could cause a wildfire. Park on pavement when possible.
βœ… Tow safely by securing chains behind vehicles to prevent dragging and causing sparks.
βœ… Maintain vehicles using spark arrestors on ATV’s and UTV’s, properly inflate tires and secure chains or other items that may drag and throw sparks.
βœ… Check tire pressure. Driving under inflated tires or on exposed wheel rims can cause sparks.

🚜 EQUIPMENT
βœ… Avoid driving or parking on dry grass, brush or weeds. Park on pavement when possible.
βœ… Even lawnmowers can cause sparks. Check your weather conditions and avoid using lawnmowers and power equipment on hot, dry days. Try to mow early in the morning and avoid mowing weeds, dry grass or rocks.
βœ… When using outdoor power equipment; i.e., welding, chainsaws, etc., make sure adequate water, hand tools and extinguishers are available in case a fire starts.
βœ… Avoid having open flames or creating sparks that can ignite dry vegetation.

🚬 SMOKING
βœ… Use an ashtray if you smoke outdoors or in a vehicle.
βœ… Dispose of ci******es or other smoking materials appropriately.
βœ… Never throw ci******es out of your car window.
