An interesting bit of history.

We are thankful for the efforts of those before us to preserve what is one of the most treasured forests in the United States.

In 1907, Theodore Roosevelt designated the Ouachita National Forest in the mountains of western Arkansas, making it the first national forest established in the entire American South. 🌲 The documented story of how the Arkansas Ouachitas became the proving ground for southern national forest conservation is one of the most consequential environmental chapters in the state's history, and the forest that resulted from it is one of the largest and most significant in the eastern United States.

The documented history of the Ouachita National Forest designation traces the conservation argument directly to the documented destruction of the Arkansas Ouachita timber industry in the late nineteenth century, when unrestricted logging of the shortleaf pine forests of western Arkansas produced documented watershed damage, stream degradation, and soil erosion that made the conservation case in concrete economic terms. Roosevelt's forestry chief Gifford Pinchot used the documented Arkansas Ouachita situation as one of the primary arguments for federal forest protection in the South, and the 1907 designation that resulted now protects nearly two million acres of Ouachita Mountain forest in Arkansas and Oklahoma. 📋

What does it mean for a state's environmental legacy that the destruction of its own timber industry made the conservation argument that produced the first southern national forest? And what would the Ouachita Mountains look like today if the 1907 designation had never happened and the unrestricted logging had continued for another generation?
