Charleston just preserved fourteen and a half acres along Bees Ferry Road in West Ashley.

City Council unanimously voted to rezone the land to conservation, taking it off the development table in one of the area’s fastest-growing corridors.

City planners say the site is wet, heavily wooded, and acts like a natural sponge — helping absorb rainwater and reduce flooding as thousands of nearby homes are built.

With more than six thousand homes planned within a five-mile radius, this move helps ease pressure on traffic, stormwater, and livability along Bees Ferry.

MUSC Health has opened a new medical pavilion bringing the area its first-ever twenty-four seven freestanding emergency room, along with trauma and triage rooms, imaging, labs, a helipad, and expanded primary, cardiology, and vascular care.

Before this, residents and Sea Island communities were more than twenty miles from the nearest hospital. This new facility fills a critical gap as Johns Island continues to grow and evolve.

About three hundred eighty apartments and townhomes are planned behind the Harris Teeter on Bees Ferry Road — but Charleston’s Design Review Board couldn’t support it yet.
