It's hot in the Lowcountry, but that's August for you. Lots to do, here's the Scuttlebutt
It’s August in the Lowcountry 2024
The dog days of summer are upon us. Between the heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms most visitors and locals alike are taking a break.
Schools will be opening this month and the SC Tax Free Weekend is coming to help get your students ready. 8/2-8/4 has been designated tax free for loads of school supplies. So if you are looking to buy even big ticket items like computers, save that 6% state portion of the sales tax.
Dorchester is bringing students in on the 8th. Berkeley
And Charleston counties will see the kiddos return on the 13th. It takes a lot to outfit students with prices going up, up and up. That’s where tax free weekend can help. Also there are groups putting together supplies to be given free of charge.
The City of Charleston announced their annual School Supply Drive. Residents are encouraged to donate supplies for students in need until the 10th. These will be packed up to be given to 4,000 students during the First Day Festival on the 11th from 1-4pm on Gaillard Lawn, Liberty Square. Donations will be accepted at most City Rec Centers.
Here we go again! Charleston is the Top City in the US once again. This makes 12 times in a row. Here are the Top Ten results:

There’s always lots to do in the Lowcountry, although by August the heat sometimes drives people indoors. At 7pm on the 1st, the Warrior Surf Foundation will present a movie about their Costa Rica surf retreat at Mex 1 Sullivan’s Island.
Jurassic Quest, the largest and most realistic traveling dinosaur experience in North America will be at the Charleston Convention Center on the 2nd from noon to 6pm.
Freshfields Village has something for just about everyone this month. Relax after a long week with Thursday Evening Jazz on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays, 6-8pm, the Music on the Green Concert series every Friday from 6-9pm, Cars and Coffee every 3rd Saturday 9-11am and the Lululemon Walking Club exploring Kiawah on the 1st and 3rd Saturday mornings at 8:330 am.
Reggae Nights Concert Series is at the James Island County Park on the 2nd at 8pm.
Can’t make to the Eras Tour? Taylor’s Version: A Swiftie Dance Party will be at the Music Farm on the 2nd at 10pm.
Kid’s Fest, a back to school celebration in Goose Creek, will be on the 3rd, 5-7pm, at Central Creek Park.
The 2nd Annual Backpacks for Bright Futures will be 9-noon at James Simons Montessori. It’s free and open to the public.
The 4th is a free day at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island.
The Charleston Library Society at 164 King St will discuss The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store on the 7th. Free and open to the public.
The Chas Friends of the Library will host their summer book sale on the 9th and 10th at the Main Library on Calhoun St.
Check in is at 7:30am for the IOP Half Rubber Tournament on the 10th at the Rec Center. Three or four person teams, games begin at 8am and lights out at 10pm.
Beeple Studios invites you (if you are over 21) to celebrate the vibrant community of Pepe at PepeFest on the 10th noon-4pm, 8pm to midnight.
Charleston Sprint Triathlon’s last event of the season will be on the 11th at James Island County Park at 7:15am.
Second Sunday, a vehicle-free 5 hours on King Street from Queen St to Calhoun St, is on the 11th starting at noon.
Joe Bonamassa’s Blues Deluxe Tour will be at the No Chas Performing Arts center on the 14th at 8pm.

Celebrate these dog days of summer with your best friend at 2 sessions 10-noon and 1-3 at Splash Island at MtP’s Palmetto Park or Splash Zone at James Island County Park on the 17th.
The 3rd Annual Entrepreneurs in Athletics & Sport Fundraiser will be on the 18th from 2-6pm at Burke High School. Enjoy sports clinics, speakers, the Chas Police vs Mt P Police basketball game, health and wellness info, kids zone and giveaways.
Dogs and their owners are invited to Yappy Hour at James Island County Park in the off leash dog park. Celebrate with live music, cold beverages and more on the 22nd at 5:30.
Spooky Empire is a 3-day convention that brings together horror movie and tv stars from the 80s thru today. The event will be at the Chas Convention Center the 23rd-25th.
In the mood for a movie and music outside overlooking the Cooper River? If so, head over to Mt P Waterfront Park on the 23rd. Music begins at 6:30 with the movie starting at around 8:15 at this free event.
The 25th Annual McElveen Race for the ARK is scheduled for the 24th. It includes a 5K run/walk and a 1-mile fun run. Both races begin and end at St Luke’s in Summerville. The 5K begins at 7:45am and the 1-miler at 8:45. Block party to follow.
The Charleston Summer Wine Festival is set to take place on the 24th at the Charleston Harbor Cruise Terminal on Concord St from 3-7pm. The 21+ event will feature over 50 wine selections, mimosas and beers included in the ticket. Food available for purchase.
The International Fly Fishing Film Festival is coming to the Charleston Music Hall for the first time on the 24th. Doors open at 6pm and the event starts at 7. The all age event will feature 9 official selections highlighting fishing adventures from all over the world.
The Riviera Theatre presents Let’s Sing Taylor—A Live Band Experience Celebrating Taylor Swift on the 30th. The all ages show (if you are under 16, you must be accompanied by and adult) begins at 8pm.
Friday, the 30th, is the All White Party, the opening event of the 3–day Lowcountry Jazz Festival presented by the Gaillard Center. Guests are invited to wear their finest white apparel and mingle with fellow jazz enthusiasts and enjoy featured performances. The festival showcases an impressive line-up of award-winning jazz singers and musicians, including headliners Samara Joy and Brian Culbertson.
The next time you are cussing the traffic, remember there are 13 worse situations according to Wallet Hub. Charleston-North Charleston ranked #14 worst traffic. In the Top Ten, there are 6 cities from CA and 3 from FL.
Good news on the sports scene. The Charleston Paddle Club is headed to Italy where they will represent the Lowcountry at an international competition just after the Paris Olympics. The Firebreather’s Dragon Boat will compete against 173 other clubs from around the world.
Spartanburg High’s golf coach was named the 2024 British Senior Amateur earlier this month. He is currently the US Senior Amateur Champion also.
The state will host 2 of the top amateur tournaments on back-to-back weekends. The 49th Palmetto Amateur is at the Aiken Palmetto course at the end of July and the SC Amateur will be at the Chas. Country Club on the 1st-4th.
SC will host 2 PGA tournaments in 2025: the RBC Heritage on the week following the Masters and the Myrtle Beach Classic on Mother’s Day.
The Stingrays will host Fan Fest on the 17th at the NoChas Coliseum from 10am-1pm. The event is free and open to the public.
Labor Day weekend brings the summer season to a close, but the hot temperatures remain. Be careful in the heat and remember that asphalt temperatures can reach in the high 150 degrees on a 90 degree day. To test if the pavement is too hot for your dogs paws, try the 7-second test. Place the back of your hand on the asphalt for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s probably too hot for your best friend. Enjoy and stay safe!
