This week Charleston lost 52 Cooper Street, a historic Eastside church that had been deemed unsafe.

At the same time, I listed 36 Mary Street, the Thomas Ryan House in Wraggborough.

The clipping in this photo is from 1978, when Historic Charleston Foundation stepped in and chose restoration over demolition.

Nearly 50 years later, 36 Mary is still here.

That is why preservation matters. Once these buildings are gone, we do not get them back.

🏡 Ballam Oaks: 18 New Homes Still Sitting Empty 🏡

If you’ve driven down John Ballam Road (just off 6 Mile Rd) lately, you’ve probably noticed the 2 rows of freshly built houses with… no one living in them. Here’s the scoop:

-The land ties back to the Ballam family dating to the 1890s.

-A lawsuit over whether John Ballam Road is public or private has stalled the entire neighborhood.

-Until it’s sorted out, 18 completed homes sit vacant — buyers in limbo, developers in court.

This is one of those “only in Mount Pleasant” stories where history, development, and legal red tape all collide. Clearly this is one of the nicest "ghost towns" I have seen!

Curious — would you take the risk and buy into a neighborhood with this kind of cloud over it? Or steer clear until the dust settles?
