Rental Scams: Don’t Become a Victim

🔍 How to Check If a Rental Property Is Legit

Verify Ownership:
Visit your local tax assessor's website to look up the property owner’s name and contact details.

Use Google Maps:
Confirm the property's appearance and location using Google Street View.

Check Real Estate Sites:
Visit websites like Zillow, Realtor.com, or Redfin to see if the property is listed for sale or rent elsewhere. Be wary if it’s listed for sale but advertised to you for rent.

Preferred:
Use a cashier’s check or bank draft for added security.

Avoid:

Payment apps like Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle, especially if you're dealing with someone you’ve never met.

Gift cards — never send gift card codes as payment for rent. That’s a common scam tactic.
