Cottrill Surveying, Inc is a small, family-owned surveying and engineering company located near Mt. The company was started in 1983 by current owner/operator James “Randy” Cottrill, PS. Our client lists include individuals, villages, cities, counties and the State of Ohio. The company was expanded in 2015 to include the engineering services with the addition of Nathan Cottrill, PE PS

We are licensed and insured to provide services throughout Ohio with the majority of our work concentrated in Fayette, Franklin, Madison, Pickaway, Ross and adjoining counties.

Noteworthy surveying fact: natural monuments take precedence over all other monuments. For instance, the Scioto River bank, a natural monument, is constantly changing but will hold over any artificial monument set.

Matthew Wood - Crew Chief

Matt joined Cottrill Surveying as a rod-man in 1997. Throughout his career, Matt has effectively adapted to advancements in surveying equipment, progressing from a Topcon total station to Lieca robotics and subsequently developing the company's GPS program in the mid-2000s. He is an expert in locating monuments and takes pride in finding lost corner stones. Matt has never taken a shortcut and continues to develop his professional skills.

We are truly blessed to have the BEST field guy on our team. In his spare time, Matt has perfected the art of automotive window tint.

James "Randy" Cottrill, PS obtained his Professional Surveying License in 1983. His PS number is 6858 and is currently the 190th oldest ACTIVE surveying license in the state Ohio.

Randy started his career using a slide rule and hand-drafting. He has completed well over 6,500 boundary surveys over the past 42 years.

Here is an interesting retracement survey that we completed back in 2017. The difference between the property lines described in the deeds and the monumented/possessed lines were nearly 100 feet. That is a difference of nearly 2 acres of ground.

This is a great example of why a survey can not simply find monuments and not check them with the deeded descriptions.
