FHA - Federal Housing Authority, FDIC - Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the FSLIC - Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation program, WPA - Works Progress Administration, Social Security Act, the SEC - Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Wagoner Act.

Not a bad list of accomplishments.

In the mid-1800s Congress tried to encourage colonization of the western territories by selling land for just $2 an acre and then reduced it to $1.25 an acre.
But that was still too expensive for some people and so they decided to give it for free to those who would come and claim it.
