In the last 23 years of real estate here in Knox County, I’ve found myself doing a lot of things that weren’t on my “bingo card,” shall we say. 😂 But I guess when you build your business on trust and relationships, this can happen.

What started out as someone needing to buy or sell a house has turned into walking alongside families for decades afterwards. Seeing them through good times and bad. Helping where I can, however I can.

Of course I’ve recommended contractors for renovations. I’ve helped countless families with the sale of personal items and moving services. I’ve shared family meals, attended birthday and anniversary celebrations, and much more.

But there are some things I didn’t expect to be called for in a real estate career.

I’ve connected a family with resources to help them navigate their need for Medicaid and guardianship affairs.

I’ve been the local point of contact for one family when their son passed, and they needed help with funeral arrangements. At the family’s request, I signed documents at the funeral home, on their behalf, to have him cremated and make arrangements for when the family could get into town.

My chaplaincy has allowed me to officiate several funerals, make hospital visitations, and I’ve been delighted to officiate a few weddings, too.

And more often than not, these are past clients. Not just friends and family. But to be honest, there’s not much of a difference between the two anymore!

I suppose when people and relationships are your focus, rather than just being interested in a business transaction, there is no limit to how God will use you.

And personally? That’s the point, after all. To leave this world “used up” knowing that Knox County is a little better off for having lived in it.

Now that’s a sandwich, Knox County! If you’re hungry I suggest you stop by 1834 Midway Tavern here in Centerburg. It’s on Clayton Street just across from the post office, and only a block off of Statewide Routes 3 and 36.

Locally owned and operated by Jason Harter, it’s no wonder why everyone loves grabbing a bite here! Wings, nachos, sandwiches and sides all come in generous portions and all the menu items are under $20.

The signature Tavern Burger is a massive hamburger patty with ham, sautéed mushrooms and jalapeños. Then it’s topped with their special tavern sauce, Swiss cheese, bbq sauce, and onion rings, all on a delicious brioche bun.

As for the sweet potato fries? They were crinkle-cut with a thick, crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior. They were seasoned, with a lightly textured coating that gives them crunch and a rich caramelized color.

Honestly, the Tavern Burger was delicious and the sweet potato fries are the best I’ve ever tasted.

If you are in the Centerburg area try it out.
If you aren’t? It’s worth the trip!
