Jeffrey Dungan Architects

Jeffrey Dungan Architects Award winning custom residential design with boutique projects across the country and internationally We truly believe design has that kind of power.

Jeffrey Dungan discovered a love for art and drawing at a young age while growing up on a family farm in rural Alabama. The surrounding nature with its trees of elegance and verticality would become the inspiration for years of studying and creating beautiful architecture. After graduating from Auburn University, Dungan would eventually start Dungan-Nequette 1999 and lead the company to dozens of

awards for residential and commercial design from Nova Scotia to the Bahamas. Located in the rolling topography of Birmingham, AL, Dungan started Jeffery Dungan Architects in 2015. Jeffery Dungan Architects is a passionate group who take pride in the creative design. Our work takes a clean and modern approach to traditional vernaculars and classical architecture. The mission is simple: to affect the livelihood of our clients in a way that simply enriches their lives. Whether building in Maine, Napa or Ireland, each of JDA’s projects begins and ends the with people we are fortunate enough to work with. In all of our creative endeavors we enjoy wonderful relationships that last well beyond the finished structure. The work created for our clients has been featured in publications from The Wall Street Journal to Garden & Gun. In 2015 Jeffrey Dungan was honored to be named a Fellow by the Institute of Classical Art and Architecture.

Every book begins with a conversation. This one began with memories of the first. Years had passed since its release, and it had reached more people than I ever imagined it would. I found myself reflecting on the road between those two books, on the work, the friendships, the failures, the lessons, and the houses that had shaped me as much as I had shaped them.

It became clear that a second book could not simply be another collection of projects. It needed to reveal something beneath the architecture. Not only the breadth of the work, but the values that gave it meaning in the first place.

“The Soulful House” is available now @ the link in my bio.

In the end, a house is never about architecture. It is about the life that slowly gathers inside it. I wanted Villa Lindsey to feel older than it is—not because it imitates the past, but because it respects the things that have always mattered.

A good house should become more itself with every passing year. It should wear time with grace. If I have done my work well, the architecture will eventually disappear, leaving only the feeling that this place could never have been any other way.

I have never believed that beauty comes from accumulation. It comes from restraint, from proportion, from knowing when enough has already been said.

The stone was chosen because it looked as though it had risen from the earth nearby. The plaster carries the mark of the hand that spread it. Light was given the same consideration as stone or timber because it is the one material that changes by the hour. Morning, afternoon, and evening each tell the house a different story. That is what gives architecture its life.

People often ask what it is like to design a house for yourself.

The truth is that it asks more of you than any client ever could. Every decision must answer to your own conscience. There is nowhere to hide behind fashion or preference. The only question worth asking is whether a thing belongs. Villa Lindsey came from that pursuit. I wanted a house that could stand in quiet conversation with the hills of Alabama, with old farmhouses, stone fences, forgotten gardens, and the deep memory of this landscape.

Architecture, at its best, does not interrupt the land. It enters into an agreement with it.

Veranda recently featured our Lake Norman house in North Carolina, designed alongside interior designer Sean Anderson.

The lot was long and narrow, but that’s exactly the kind of site that keeps you honest—it tells you where to celebrate the views and where to shield against them, and if you’re really paying attention, the house starts to lay itself out. Read the full feature at the link in my bio.

We’re honored to be featured in T Magazine.

It is always meaningful to see the work find its way into a larger conversation about architecture, beauty, and the places we call home. Grateful to T: The New York Times Style Magazine for the thoughtful attention to our work.

There is a quiet beauty in the simplicity of life on a farm; in the open land, honest materials, and traditions carried forward.
This Georgia farmhouse is the foundation for a life that reaches beyond our own, built to hold generations and become a legacy.

On Kiawah Island, rich materials bring depth and soul to every room, while dreamy sunlight moves quietly through the house. Beyond the windows, plant life dances in the ocean breeze; interiors and landscape living in effortless conversation.
