Arkansas House Bill 1278 now Act 99 is a new and official requirment for all Surveyors entering onto Poultry Farms to notify and comply with all Biosecurity protocols..

Not sure who made a poultry farmer mad that this had to be done, but its common sense..

taken in the summer of 1883, showcases a team from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) engaged in fieldwork near Fort Wingate, New Mexico. These surveyors are likely using bar and chain measuring methods, vital for establishing base lines in triangulation surveys, a key technique in mapping large swathes of land accurately before the advent of more modern equipment. Establishing an accurate base line was the foundation for large-scale mapping efforts, allowing for precise triangulation across vast terrains. This would have been crucial for understanding topography, resource allocation, and future development in the expanding American West.

What piece of modern gear would have made this crew’s life easier?

How we got here.......................!
I always was curious as to the exact routes our ancestors used to arrive in this land. To my disappointment that map did not exist. So, I spent the last week collecting maps, doing research, and then finally creating this document. I gladly share this with anyone that also was curious about this.

Most of our early settlers into the Buffalo River region and the state of Arkansas came by way of the Southwest Trail. The trail avoided the swamps, which covered much of eastern Arkansas, while skirting the foothills of the Ozarks and the Ouachita’s.

Those coming from Tennessee and the southern Appalachian Mountains traveled north to cross the Mississippi River at Green’s Ferry just north of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. From there, they would travel south to connect with the trail at Greenville, Missouri. Hix Ferry located on the Current River was the location where travelers first entered Arkansas.

The date December 14, 1842, is shown as the day Newton county was created and completed the counties that now make up the home of the Buffalo River. Although the county lines would be altered some over the years this can serve as a foundation map for all our early pre-Civil War history.
