While it’s a somber chapter, it also highlights the resilience and strength of West Virginians during the height of the coal mining era. Events like these shaped our state’s legacy and remind us of the hardworking communities that built the foundation of modern Appalachia.

Did you ever eat at a Burger Chef in West Virginia?

This fast-food pioneer, born in Indianapolis in 1957, made its way across the U.S., including several beloved locations in West Virginia. Known for its flame broiler that cooked 800 patties an hour and its innovative Works Bar, where customers customized their burgers, Burger Chef was ahead of its time.

By the 1970s, it had 1,200 locations, offering iconic menu items like the Big Shef and Funmeal, which entertained kids with toys and adventures featuring mascots like Burger Chef and Jeff. Many West Virginians still recall the joy of grabbing a burger at their local spot.
