Dare County will purchase all Spirit Airlines aircraft to repurpose them as structural cores for rebuilding and stabilizing natural sand dunes along vulnerable stretches of the Outer Banks. This initiative aims to reinforce erosion-prone areas near Rodanthe and Buxton, where repeated washouts have threatened infrastructure and coastal resilience. By integrating large-scale materials beneath the sand, the county hopes to create more durable dune systems that better withstand storms and rising sea levels
