TONIGHT: We will be monitoring potential for another chance at statewide aurora viewing. We have an incoming solar storm that was launched off the sun yesterday morning. This solar storm was very fast, with an estimated transit time from the sun to earth of around 30-36 hours, putting the *ESTIMATED* time of earth arrival between 11pm and 3am tonight.

Now as we all know, solar storms are very fickle and forecasted times are often incorrect - so take ours with a grain of salt.

Now there’s a few other things to note:

This solar storm was aimed a little bit to the south and east of earth. What this means is that the “meat and potatoes” or what we call the “bulk” of the solar storm may either graze us, or miss earth completely. Even if the bulk misses earth, we still expect the shockwave to impact earth as this was a wide solar storm. Translating to plain English - this just means that we may see a shorter duration event vs long lasting and the best part may be directly after impact.

Timing inconsistencies among space models. This is no surprise, but there’s a 12 hour difference in some of our space models. Some of them say this solar storm will arrive at 4am, while others say it won’t hit until after sunrise Monday. It’s a little bit of a crapshoot, but we lean on the quicker side of the solution due to various factors that we won’t dive into.

Cloud cover may hinder viewing tonight for some areas. Models suggest broken cloud cover or high clouds tonight. So while I don’t think we’re out of luck as a whole state, I do think some of you may be dealing with more clouds than others. Check your skies before heading out.

Bottom line, statewide Aurora chances are on the table tonight, but a couple of things are holding back our confidence from being higher. Stay tuned, and we will keep you updated.
