Ever wonder where all those apple cores and eggshells go?
Unfortunately, a lot end up in landfills, creating a big problem. When food rots in landfills, it gets smothered by trash and doesn't get enough air. This lack of oxygen leads to the creation of methane, a greenhouse gas way more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in our atmosphere.
Thankfully, curbside composting programs are like superheroes fighting this smelly gas! Here's how they work:
👉 Sign up for your city's program and they'll provide you with a special bin, usually sealed to keep out odors and critters.
👉 Think banana peels, eggshells, leftover veggies, coffee grounds, even tea bags (minus the staple!).
👉 Put your bin out with the rest of your trash on the designated day.
They whisk your bin away to a composting facility.
👉 At the facility, food scraps get mixed with other organic materials and piles are turned regularly to give them air. This allows them to decompose properly, creating nutrient-rich soil instead of methane.
Some programs even let you get the finished compost back to use in your garden, closing the loop and giving your plants a healthy boost!
