One of the Great Smoky Mountains’ most incredible views and experiences comes at the Shuckstack Fire Tower in North Carolina, where a steep climb leads to one of the widest views in the region. The tower stands above Fontana Lake, with clear days revealing the Nantahala, Cheoah, Unicoi, and Snowbird mountain ranges stretching far into the distance, and even Clingmans Dome visible on the horizon. Reaching it takes a 3.5-mile hike from Fontana Dam along the Appalachian Trail, gaining over 2,100 feet in elevation before a short side trail leads to the structure. Built in 1934, the steel tower rises above the trees and was once used to spot forest fires across this rugged landscape. A climb up its 78 tight, exposed steps brings you to the top, where a full 360-degree view opens up in every direction. The fire tower is one of the last remaining in the park that visitors can still climb, making it both a rare piece of history and a hard-earned viewpoint.
