Some well-earned national recognition for our island hospital.

The Nantucket Current reports that Nantucket Cottage Hospital was named the 10th "Most Beautiful Hospital in America" in Soliant Health's 2026 Most Beautiful Hospitals contest, following weeks of public voting. Nantucket Cottage Hospital was one of 57 facilities nationwide to reach the public voting stage, and 20 hospitals made the final list.

Soliant Health said the hospital was nominated for its welcoming island setting, thoughtful design, and the warmth and compassion of its staff, pointing to "hydrangeas and a whale-tail statue in the courtyard" among the seasonal touches that "reflect the hospital's connection to Nantucket."

Congratulations to everyone at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and thank you for the care you give this community every day.

A generous send-off from a Nantucket favorite.

The Nantucket Current reports that Luke Tedeschi, who operated the Tavern & Gazebo for 34 years, has donated $18,000 to Dr. Tim Lepore's nonprofit, Addiction Solutions of Nantucket. The money came from auctioning off Tavern & Gazebo signs and memorabilia, including its 25 and Up sign, the drink menu and a Hog Island B**r Co. sign.

"I was going to sell it all and then pick a nonprofit to give it back to the island and the community, and that's what I did," Tedeschi told the Current.

Addiction Solutions of Nantucket provides free addiction treatment on the island, including medication-assisted treatment, counseling and 24/7 support. "We don't require insurance. We don't ask for money from the patient. We provide free care, and this is so important to keep it going," Dr. Lepore said.

Thank you, Luke, for 34 years of memories and for giving back one more time.

Why the corner matters.

33 Main Street sits on the premier corner of Main and Federal Streets, in the heart of downtown Nantucket's retail district. Dual frontage on both streets means high visibility, oversized display windows and steady foot traffic from the island's seasonal and year-round residents.

Corners like this rarely come up. Nantucket's Formula Business Exclusion District, adopted in 2006, generally keeps national chains out of the historic downtown, so prime corner frontage is scarce.

Built in 1847 and carefully maintained, the building pairs historic charm with modern systems: an elevator, central HVAC, a sprinkler and fire system, and CCTV. It's income-producing, with license agreements in place.

For sale at $10,000,000 (MLS 92963). The lower-level retail space, with its own Federal Street access, is also offered for lease: it is available January 1, 2027, ready for a tenant for summer 2027.

Two weeks, one building, a lot of history.

If you've been following along, you know the story: 33 Main Street was built in 1847, as downtown Nantucket rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1846. It sits on the premier corner of Main and Federal, with a ground floor that has three ways in and out, four versatile levels, and modern systems (elevator, central HVAC, sprinkler and fire system, CCTV). It's income-producing, with license agreements in place.

For sale at $10,000,000 (MLS 92963). The lower-level retail space is also offered for lease: it is available January 1, 2027, ready for a tenant for summer 2027.

This Sunday, our thanks go to the Nantucket Police Department.

The Nantucket Current reports that NPD received a Gold Award at the Annual AAA Traffic Safety Awards on October 20 for its ongoing commitment to improving traffic safety across the island. Police Chief Jody Kasper said the work includes traffic safety education in local schools and throughout the community, data-guided enforcement in areas where speeding is a concern, and enforcement of e-bike and micromobility laws.

Chief Kasper also credited the Town's staff, the Traffic Safety Staff Workgroup and community partners, including work on new multi-use paths that give people safer ways to get around. "This recognition belongs to the entire community," she said.

To the officers and staff of NPD, and everyone working to keep our roads and paths safe: thank you.

With gratitude,

Good news for Nantucket's animals and the families who love them.

The Inquirer and Mirror reports that Cape Cod 5 employees have selected Nantucket Island Safe Harbor for Animals (NiSHA) to receive a $10,000 grant. The grant supports NiSHA's work providing care and services for animals and their families throughout the Nantucket community.

The award came through Cape Cod 5's annual employee-voted grant program, which lets employees help direct charitable funding to nonprofits in the communities the bank serves.

"NiSHA provides an important resource for animals and families across Nantucket," said Bert Talerman, president of Cape Cod 5.

Congratulations to the NiSHA team, and thank you for caring for the island's animals.

Your questions about 33 Main Street, answered.

Q: Is it for sale or for lease?

Q: Who is in the building today?
A: It is income-producing, with license agreements in place. Hill House Home, an upscale clothing and home goods retailer, occupies the ground floor, the second floor and the apartment.

Q: What are the four levels?
A: Lower-level retail with its own street access, ground-floor corner retail with 14-foot ceilings and three ways in and out (Main Street, Federal Street and Independence Way), second-floor office space, and a third-floor one-bedroom apartment. Full details at www.33ACK.com.

Q: How modern is a building from 1847?
A: It has an elevator, central HVAC, a sprinkler and fire system, and CCTV.

Q: Why does downtown frontage matter so much here?
A: Nantucket's Formula Business Exclusion District, adopted in 2006, generally keeps chain businesses out of the historic downtown, so prime corner frontage is scarce.

Congratulations to Alison Stravato.

The Nantucket Current reports that Alison Stravato, operations supervisor for the Nantucket District Court, has been named a recipient of a 2026 Massachusetts Trial Court Excellence Award. The award recognizes "outstanding public service, dedication, and contributions to the administration of justice."

She was one of more than 160 nominees across all categories, and one of just two individual recipients in the District Court category. She has been with the court for six years and an island resident for two decades.

"I didn't expect this at all but it is exciting," Stravato said.

Thank you for the work that keeps island services running.

A new middle school home for the Nantucket Lighthouse School.

The Inquirer and Mirror reports that the Lighthouse School has opened a new middle school building at 49 Fairgrounds Road, just a stone's throw from its Rugged Road campus. The property came to the school through a Lighthouse School family, who acquired it and gave it to the school to expand its middle school programming.

The school's hands-on, project-based approach, with a slow and intentional approach to technology, has helped its enrollment keep climbing.

"This type of education is feeling like it's cutting edge, the nature of education, but really we've been doing it over 26 years since our founding," said Julia Maury, dean of students and director of admissions.

Strong schools help keep year-round families on the island. Congratulations to the Lighthouse School community.
