In 1990, Plainfield had about 4,500 residents. Today it's approaching 49,000.
That's one of the steepest growth curves in the Chicago area, and it's written into the housing stock: ranch and split-level homes near the historic downtown, 1990s and 2000s subdivisions across most of the village, and new construction still going up on the western and southern edges.
It also shapes the school question. Plainfield District 202 is the fifth-largest public school system in Illinois, covering roughly 64 square miles and reaching into Joliet, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Naperville, and Crest Hill. Five high schools — Central, North, South, East, and West — and which one serves an address comes down to the neighborhood.
Where the market sits as of August: homes for sale up 16.3%, closed sales up 17.1%, average market time down 8.3%, and median price within a percentage point of a year ago. Busier and faster, with values holding.
