Why do people bury St. Joseph in their yard when selling a house?
🔸 The Tradition
In Catholic tradition, St. Joseph is considered the patron saint of house hunters and home sellers, among other things.
St. Joseph's patronage of house hunters and real estate transactions comes from his role as the provider and protector of the Holy Family — the one responsible for finding shelter in Bethlehem, securing safe refuge in Egypt, and establishing a home in Nazareth. His entire life was one of providing housing and security for those in his care.
🔸 How It’s Usually Done
• A small statue of St. Joseph is buried in the yard (practices vary).
• The homeowner offers prayers asking for guidance and a successful sale.
• Once the house is sold, the statue is dug up and placed in a place of honor in the new home.
