People love saying renting is a waste of money. It’s not. You’re paying for a place to live. That’s not nothing.

Renting means no surprise repair bills, no property taxes, no HOA nonsense, no stress when something breaks. You pay your rent and move on with your life. That flexibility matters, especially if you’re still figuring things out financially or personally.

Buying a home before you’re ready can actually mess you up. Maintenance adds up, taxes go up, and suddenly you’re house-poor instead of building savings. Owning isn’t always the “smart move” people make it out to be.

There’s nothing wrong with renting while you save, clear debt, or wait for the right time. Renting can be a smart choice, not a fallback.

Today I sat outside my childhood home in Bolingbrook. We haven’t lived there since 1993. I grew up in this home.
Just sat there. Quiet. Frozen in place by memories that refuse to stay buried.

I brought coffee and a cannoli with me. Something small. Something comforting. I sat there sipping and taking slow bites, pretending for a moment that if I closed my eyes hard enough, she might walk out the door and tell me I was going to ruin my appetite.

This house raised me. These walls heard my laughter, my tears, my slammed doors, my late-night talks with my mom in the kitchen when the world felt too heavy. And today… it felt unbearably empty without her.

I could almost smell her cooking — the kind of food that didn’t come from a recipe, just from love. Holiday meals that took all day, pots bubbling, music playing, decorations going up one by one like she was stitching magic into the house. She made home feel warm. Safe. Alive.

Christmas was never just Christmas here at 497 Nassau. It was her.
Her traditions. Her hands. Her way of making everyone feel like they belonged.

Sitting there today, coffee going cold, cannoli crumbs on my coat, I realized something brutal: you don’t just lose a parent… you lose the version of yourself that only existed when they were here. The girl who knew Mom would fix it. The adult who still needed her anyway.

I miss her in ways words don’t cover.
I miss calling her. I miss hearing her voice. I miss knowing she was just there.

If you still have your mom-hug her harder. Call her more. Sit at the table longer. One day, you’ll sit outside your childhood home with coffee in your hands and wish you could go back just once.

Mom, I hope heaven feels like home.
Because home down here still aches without you. 💔
