Downsizing a parent’s home can be one of the most emotional parts of a senior transition.

A home may contain decades of photographs, furniture, family heirlooms, collections, and memories. Trying to sort everything quickly can become overwhelming for both the senior and the family.

I help families create an organized downsizing plan that may include deciding what moves to the new residence, distributing belongings to family, selling valuable items, coordinating donations, arranging movers, and preparing the home for sale.

Downsizing is not about getting rid of a lifetime. It is about thoughtfully deciding what comes along into the next chapter.

Having witnessed firsthand how Naples and other Southwest Florida communities have changed over the years, I understand why so many retirees are drawn here—but also why affordability is becoming a real concern. Many of the most popular retirement cities are seeing home prices rise, along with insurance, taxes, and healthcare costs. As a Senior Transition Specialist and longtime local, I always encourage retirees and their families to look at the full picture—total expenses, not just the sticker price of a home. Sometimes, it makes sense to consider more affordable areas nearby or even explore renting before deciding to buy. My experience navigating these changes helps clients weigh all their options carefully, so major life transitions can be a little less overwhelming and a lot more informed.
