The century of progress pictured here is but half the story that began when Samuel Batchelder’s imagination sparked at the sight of a natural 47-foot drop in the flow of the S**o River. A textile dynasty followed — along with a large helping of social change. Museum walking tours are currently available for online booking, along with videos and other resources.

Downtown Biddeford seems to have a store, place, or spot for nearly every taste, mood, or need. For sheer elegance, I suggest WOOVEN. At 160 Main Street, it’s close enough to City Hall to hear the hourly chimes from the clock tower. When done here, an appropriate follow-up awaits a short block away in a visit to the Lincoln Hotel.

The Riverwalk footbridge awaits completion of a 5-year, $8M project to replace a storm-damaged Overlook Park with a completely re-imagined facility that is sure to become a major attraction. Completion date TBD.
