Jars of Love.

There’s something about a shelf full of mason jars that stops me in my tracks.

This photo took me straight back to my grandparents’ storm shelter. Rows and rows of jars just like these, floor to ceiling, filled with everything they’d grown with their own hands. Every single one of them filled with something else too, though you couldn’t see it through the glass.

Love. Pure and simple.

My grandparents plowed. They planted. They picked, prepared, and preserved. They never once thought twice about sharing it all with family, friends, and neighbors. That’s just who they were.

Every summer, my mom would pile all the cousins into her station wagon and haul us out to help. We picked blackberries until our fingers turned purple. We cleaned vegetables at the kitchen sink. We argued over who had to do what.

But the memory that stays with me, the one I’d trade almost anything to have back, sitting on that back porch snapping beans with my grandmother.

I’ll be honest. At the time, I would have given anything to be somewhere else. Anywhere else.

Now I would give everything just to be back on that porch. Listening to her stories. Catching the wisdom she tucked into ordinary conversation like she wasn’t even trying.

Those jars weren’t just food for winter.

They were proof that someone loved you enough to plan ahead for you. To work hard for you. To save something good for you before you even knew you’d need it.

I hope you have a memory like that somewhere in you.

And if you do, hope you’re soaking it in right now, while you still can. 🫙
