🔎 Who Is the Man in the Middle of Lebanon’s Town Square?

If you’ve ever driven through the Lebanon Square and wondered who that bronze man is… you’re not alone.

That’s General Robert Hopkins Hatton — a key figure in Lebanon’s early history.

Before the Civil War, Hatton was one of the town’s rising leaders: a Cumberland University grad, lawyer, state representative, and U.S. Congressman, known for his sharp mind and big ambitions.

When Tennessee seceded, he raised a local unit called the “Lebanon Blues.” These were everyday locals who followed him into the 7th Tennessee Infantry. Hatton was later promoted to brigadier general and killed in 1862 at the Battle of Seven Pines.

So why the statue?
In 1912, local residents and the United Daughters of the Confederacy placed the monument in the center of the square, honoring Hatton as Lebanon’s most prominent fallen officer. His remains rest in Cedar Grove Cemetery, just a few blocks away.

Today, the statue sparks history, reflection, and conversation.
Whether you see it as a landmark or simply something you’ve driven past a thousand times — it’s part of the story of how Lebanon remembers its past.

Next time you circle the square, take a second look.
