If you're self-employed, lenders don't just look at the money coming into your bank account; they look at what you report on your tax returns.

A common mistake? Writing off every possible business expense to lower your taxes. That can save you money today, but it can also lower the income a lender uses to qualify you for a home.

For example, you might earn $80,000, but if your tax return shows $35,000 after deductions, that's the income the lender may use.
