Local Spotlight: Mike's Music & Dance Barn

Pull on your boots and head out State Road 46 to Mike's Music & Dance Barn, about 4 miles from the Village of Nashville. Mike Robertson and his family built the barn by hand in 1997, and he still plays his sax on stage!

Monday is line dancing night with Billy and Carla Crase. Doors open at 6, dancing starts at 6:30, and it's $10 for all ages. No partner or experience needed..... beginners are welcome. Friday and Saturday nights bring live bands, homemade food and a full bar.

Afterward, head back to Helmsburg Homestead for a soak in the swim spa, or sit by the fire at the 1891 Schoolhouse Inn.

Hours can change around holidays, so call 812-988-8636 before you go.

Fall evenings at Helmsburg Homestead are made for slowing down. Light the wood stove in the chiseled stone fireplace, then soak in the swim spa under the trees..... Our guest Ladoshia said it best!

Hand-hewn poplar logs, five quiet acres and about a mile from the Village of Nashville. Stay at The HELM.

October is a wonderful month to hike in Brown County!

I put together a list of 12 places to walk and hike, sorted by how far each one is from Helmsburg Homestead. Deer Run Park is just 1 mile down the road, and Brown County State Park is only 4 miles away. Pick a short stroll or a full day on the trail, then come back to five quiet acres and a cozy log home.....

Our free printable guide, with every trail length and tip, is on the My Brown County Vacation blog.

Halloween weekend in Brown County.....and Helmsburg Homestead is open October 30 and 31!

IU hosts Minnesota in Bloomington on Saturday, and the hills are still putting on a show. The HELM sits just a mile from the Village of Nashville, so dinner, shopping and the Brown County Music Center are only minutes away. Then come home to hand-hewn poplar logs, 5 quiet acres, the fire pit and the swim spa under the trees.

Message me to book your dates. I would love to host you!

Planning your next Brown County getaway? I’ve created something for you.

One of my favorite parts of hosting at Helmsburg Homestead is helping guests discover Brown County beyond the cabin...where to eat, what’s happening this weekend, which shops are worth a stop, where the locals go and those little discoveries you might otherwise miss.

So I’ve created The Brown County Insider, a new Facebook group devoted to exactly that.

Whether you’re staying at The HELM, planning your first Brown County trip, or have been coming here for years, I’d love to have you join us.

A note from Leah....on why this little corner of Helmsburg holds such a special place in my heart. Five acres, a swim spa, and a sense of peace that is difficult to put into words, but you feel it almost immediately.

Stay at The HELM: mybrowncountyvacation.com/helmsburg-homestead

I fell in love with this property the moment I stepped foot on it. Over the years, families traveling with children who have special needs have shared with me how their children seem to exhale here....to relax, explore, and simply be themselves. It's one of the things I treasure most about The HELM.

Peak color, midweek quiet.

The second and third weeks of October are the best the woods look all year, and midweek is when you get Brown County at its actual pace..... no crowds on the trails, no wait for a table in Nashville.

Helmsburg Homestead sits on five acres with a swim spa, and we have Sunday through Thursday nights open right through peak color. Single nights are fine, so you can come for one or stay the week.

Dates and rates are on the site. Please let me know if you would like help picking a night!

Travelers used to default to hotels.

But more and more guests are discovering that vacation homes offer something hotels simply can’t.

More space and more privacy. And, a stay that actually feels like part of the getaway.

Instead of one standard hotel room, vacation rentals often offer separate living areas, full kitchens, and private outdoor space, giving travelers room to truly relax and settle in.

That’s exactly why I love hosting guests in Brown County. The goal is simple: To give travelers a stay that feels personal, memorable, and uniquely Brown County.

If you’re planning a getaway and wondering vacation rental vs hotel — which is better, I break it all down in my newest blog post.
