My college journalism professors would be proud. After all these years, I just can't shake digging into an article and critiquing it.--especially if it's about real estate.
Take this one from the Nashville Business Journal. The email slugline is "The best places to buy a home in Nashville". The headline on the story says they're going to mathematically tell me where it's better to buy vs rent in Nashville. Hummm, interesting. I was just talking about this with a first time homebuyer. And there's a ratio I didn't know I needed!
Now for the critique -- first off, great map showing by census tract where this magic ratio calculates that you're better to rent than buy. But, what it doesn't do is factor in the major benefits of home ownership like building equity, value appreciation, a locked in monthly payment, and a sense of place, home and security.
How to use the info? Zoom in on the map. It does a great job of mathematically reinforcing what a good agent knows already: where those pockets homes may be that are more attainable for first time homebuyers.
Not exactly what I was expecting when I opened it, but well worth the read!
