Today, we join the country music family in remembering the incomparable Dolly Parton.
Dolly’s songs, unmistakable voice, humor, determination & generosity made her one of the most beloved artists country music has ever known. From “Jolene” and “Coat of Many Colors” to “I Will Always Love You” and “9 to 5,” she wrote songs that became part of our lives and opened doors for generations of women who followed.
Tammy had enormous admiration for Dolly. In 1993, she spoke of Dolly as one of the most gifted singers and songwriters she knew. That same year, Tammy, Dolly and their dear friend Loretta Lynn finally came together on H***Y TONK ANGELS, an album that celebrated the country music they loved and the women who helped shape it.
Dolly co-produced the album with Steve Buckingham, and the three legends traded leads and harmonies on country standards alongside songs of their own. Tammy contributed “That’s the Way It Could Have Been,” while Dolly brought “Let Her Fly” and “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” Their recording of “Silver Threads and Golden Needles” went on to earn Grammy and CMA nominations.
The photo here captures three women whose voices, songs and strength helped change country music forever.
We send our love to Dolly’s family, friends and the millions of people around the world who loved her.
Rest in peace, Dolly.
