Old and lonely, I thought a dog would complete my life.
I found him wandering around, dirty, hungry, I stroked him, he followed me without fear.
Now this is my dog, I am his master.
I talk to him, he licks my hands.
“Tomorrow we have nothing to eat, the pension has run out, we have to wait!”
The blessed day arrives, in line with other pensioners, the booklet, crumpled by time, clutched tightly in my hands as I wait for my turn. Fido wags his tail happily.
He knows we're eating more and a little better today.
It's winter, my house is cold without a fire. We stay close together and keep warm. Spring begins and we thank the sun together while a prayer rises in my heart: “Thank you, Lord, for creating the dog...”
