When you spend your career seeing lakes from 30,000 feet, apparently you start noticing a few things. ✈️👀

Over the years, we’ve heard a surprisingly similar story from several pilots who ended up buying at Lake James: they’d flown over countless lakes across the South, but something about Lake James stood out.

Clear water. Mountain views. And apparently, a pretty good view from the window seat. 🌊

Maybe the pilots are onto something.

The coves might be the most underrated part of Lake James. 🌊

People sometimes write them off because they assume the water is stagnant or they’ll be fighting bugs all summer. But that’s one of those Lake James misconceptions worth clearing up.

And once you factor in the quieter water, privacy, and tucked-away feeling… cove life starts looking pretty good.

I came across this fellow, or lady as the case may be, on my nature walk around Lake James. It seems our native wild muscadine grapes are quite the palate pleaser when it comes to a box turtle snack.

One of the greatest blessings of living on Lake James is the water itself—clean, clear, and refreshingly cold, especially in the spring.

That beauty is not accidental.

Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina has spent years protecting forests, streams, watersheds, and other important lands throughout Western North Carolina. Their work supports wildlife, outdoor recreation, local communities, and everyone who enjoys Lake James.

Protecting the land around our waterways helps protect the water that eventually flows into the lake. It is a reminder that conservation and recreation can work together to preserve the places we love.

Whether you enjoy hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, exploring, or simply watching the mountains fade into the evening sky, those experiences depend on caring for this special place.

Always good to read about this news!

Last week, Governor Josh Stein announced more than $9.8 million in Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grants to support 25 local parks and recreation projects across the state.

Combined with $4 million awarded through the Helene Recovery Fund earlier this year, PARTF has provided nearly $14 million in grants to counties and municipalities this fiscal year. With local matching funds, these investments will leverage $43.5 million for land acquisition, new recreation facilities, and improvements to existing parks.

Administered by North Carolina State Parks, PARTF helps communities across the state create and improve parks, trails, recreation facilities, and other spaces that encourage people to get outside, stay active, and connect with their communities.

Congratulations to this year’s grant recipients! We look forward to seeing these projects take shape and expand outdoor recreation opportunities across North Carolina. 🌲🥾🚲
