Cold Water Shock Can Happen Even on the Hottest Days Along the Oregon Coast
As temperatures rise across Oregon during the summer, many people head to the beach looking to cool off. What many visitors do not realize is that the Pacific Ocean remains dangerously cold year round, even when air temperatures climb into the 80s or 90s.
Ocean temperatures along the Oregon Coast typically stay in the low to mid 50s. Entering water that cold can trigger a condition known as cold water shock. The sudden exposure can cause an involuntary gasp, rapid breathing, panic, and a loss of muscle control within seconds.
Even experienced swimmers can quickly find themselves in trouble. The bodyโs ability to swim and stay afloat can be affected long before hypothermia becomes a concern. Many drowning victims are caught off guard by how quickly the cold water impacts their ability to react.
If you are visiting the coast this summer, use caution around the surf, keep a close watch on children, avoid swimming alone, and consider wearing a life jacket when recreating near the water.
The Oregon Coast is beautiful during the summer, but the ocean remains cold enough to become life threatening in just minutes. Respect the water, stay aware of your surroundings, and enjoy the coast safely.
