Protect Yourself and Your Family from Measles!

Measles is a highly contagious virus that can cause serious illness, especially in young children. The good news? Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your family! 💉
Here are a few important things to know:

Know the symptoms:
Measles often begins with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A rash typically develops a few days later, starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body.

Understand the risks:
Measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, brain swelling, and, in severe cases, death.

Check your vaccination status:
The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. Two doses provide about 97% protection against measles.

Need a vaccine appointment? Contact the Floyd County Health Department at (812) 948- 4726 or scan the QR Code on this post to schedule an appointment.

Rabies is a deadly but preventable viral disease that can affect people and animals. In the U.S., rabies is most often associated with wildlife such as bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes, but any mammal can potentially carry the virus.

Here are a few important ways to protect yourself, your family, and your pets:

Know the signs: Early symptoms can include weakness, fever, headache, or pain, tingling, or itching at the site of a bite. As the disease progresses, more serious neurological symptoms can develop.

Protect your pets: Keep dogs, cats, and ferrets up to date on their rabies vaccinations and avoid allowing pets to interact with wildlife.

Avoid wildlife: Never touch wild, sick, injured, or dead animals—even if they appear harmless.

If you are bitten or scratched: Immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) can prevent rabies when given before symptoms begin.

Travel safely: If traveling, learn whether rabies is common at your destination and avoid unfamiliar animals, especially dogs and cats.

📞 Report animal bites: In Floyd County, animal bites involving dogs, cats, or ferrets can be reported to the Floyd County Health Department at (812) 948-4726, Ext. 2, Option 1
