Many of our auctions are held at our facility, Crown Event Center, in New Carlisle. We have 7 acres with plenty of parking, a beautiful 8,000 square foot show room inside, and many other amenities.

Tucked into a neighborhood in the South Bend/Mishawaka area is a salon with a memorable name, an interesting historyโ€”and an owner who has spent nearly four decades getting to know the people who sit in his chair.

For this Wainscott Neighborhood Spotlight, we visited Doug Branson, owner of Curl Up and Dye, to learn a little more about the man and the local business behind the name.

And, of course, we had to start by asking:

Where did a name like Curl Up and Dye come from?

๐ŸŽฌ ๐ˆ๐ง๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฒ ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ

Doug says he always knew he wanted to do hair. And years ago, while watching The Blues Brothers, a certain salon name caught his attention.

He remembers thinking that someday, when he owned his own salon, that was what he would call it: Curl Up and Dye.

That someday eventually came.

Doug has now been doing hair for 37 years and has owned Curl Up and Dye for close to 20 of them.

โค๏ธ ๐Œ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐“๐ก๐š๐ง ๐‚๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ

Doug grew up around Osceola, Mishawaka and South Bend and says he has always lived in this area. Over the course of his career, he hasn't just built a customer listโ€”he's built relationships that span generations.

Some clients have been with him for the entire 37 years he's been doing hair.

After that much time together, Doug says the relationship isn't really โ€œclient and stylistโ€ anymore.

They're friends.

As Doug explained, when you're doing someone's hair year after year, you hear everything. You become part of one another's lives.

He's also seen those clients move through different stages of lifeโ€”from people wanting the latest, trendiest hairstyle to longtime customers who know exactly how they've always worn their hair and want to keep it that way.

That kind of relationship is something that's difficult to measureโ€”but it's a big part of what makes a longtime neighborhood business special.

When we asked Doug what he enjoys about owning a local business, part of his answer was simple: being his own boss and setting his own schedule.

But he also makes a point of supporting other locally owned businesses.

During our conversation, several familiar Michiana names came up, including Craft One Half, Doc Pierce's, the Phoenix and Oliva's. Doug told us he's been going to Doc Pierce's for around 40 years.

โ€œI like to support local,โ€ he said.

And really, that's what these Neighborhood Spotlights are about.

Local businesses supporting local businessesโ€”and neighbors supporting the people who help give their community its character.

๐Ÿ  ๐€ ๐’๐š๐ฅ๐จ๐ง ๐–๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐š ๐‹๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‡๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ˆ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐Ž๐ฐ๐ง

One of our favorite details came near the end of the conversation.

Doug has only been in the salon's current location for about a year and a half, and there's a reason he chose it: it's attached to his home.

As we joked during the interview: not a bad commute.

But the building itself has a story that goes back much further.

Doug told us it was originally a neighborhood grocery store, probably sometime around the 1940s. Even more interesting, the woman who operated a salon there before Doug was the granddaughter of the people who had owned that grocery store.

So while the purpose of the building has changed over the years, in a way it has continued doing the same thing:

serving the neighborhood around it.

โœ‚๏ธ ๐”๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ ๐‡๐ž โ€œ๐ƒ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐›โ€

Finally, we asked Doug where he hopes to see Curl Up and Dye five or ten years from now.

His first answer?

โ€œRetirement.โ€

Then he reconsidered that timeline a little.

Maybe not five years. Maybe ten.

And then came the line that probably sums Doug up better than anything we could write:

โ€œI'm going to do it until I drop the comb.โ€

After 37 years, generations of clients and countless conversations behind the chair, we'd say he's earned the right to decide when that comb finally drops.

Until then, Curl Up and Dye remains another one of those small, locally owned businesses that makes Michiana feel like home.

โ˜˜๏ธ Exceptional Notre Dame football collectible featuring a 2009 Squier by Fender Vintage Modified Telecaster Thinline electric guitar bearing the signatures of three legendary Fighting Irish head coaches: Ara Parseghian, Lou Holtz and Brian Kelly. The three coaches represent more than five decades of Notre Dame football history. Parseghian led the Irish to national championships in 1966 and 1973; Holtz guided Notre Dame to a perfect 12-0 season and the 1988 national championship; and Kelly became Notre Dame's all-time winningest head coach in 2021. A unique piece of Fighting Irish memorabilia bringing together three prominent eras of Notre Dame football on a single signed instrument.

๐Ÿช Crowleyโ€™s Needles Advertising Cabinet โ€“ Crowleyโ€™s was a well-known name associated with sewing needles and needle products, sold through the general stores and dry-goods shops that served communities across America. Advertising cabinets like this were designed to keep small merchandise organized while putting the brand prominently in front of customers.
๐Ÿงต Clarkโ€™s 4-Drawer Spool Thread Cabinet โ€“ The story of Clarkโ€™s thread goes back to Scotland, with the Clark family establishing American manufacturing in Newark, New Jersey, in the 1860s. In the 1880s, Clark developed its famous โ€œOur New Thread,โ€ or O.N.T., a soft-finished, six-cord thread designed especially for the growing popularity of sewing machines. Clarkโ€™s O.N.T. became one of the most recognizable thread brands in America and was a staple in general stores nationwide. The company later merged with J. & P. Coats in 1896, with the brand eventually becoming part of Coats & Clark.
๐Ÿ“œ Together, these cabinets provide a fascinating look at American retail, advertising and the importance of sewing in everyday life. Before modern big-box stores, displays like these sat on the counters of local merchants, putting essential sewing supplies right at the customer's fingertips.
