I want to introduce myself to you. 💙
I am a native of New Castle for my entire life. I was born at Henry County Hospital (that was what it was called back in that day), was a Westwood Wildcat during my elementary school days, went to Temple Christian School 7th-11th (was a part of Temple Baptist Church), and in 12th grade I was homeschooled. All in New Castle. I also went to "Chrysler" High School for a while where Mr. Robbins begged me to be on the speech debate team.
The day I was born my father was ordained into the ministry that night. Some of you may remember my dad, Rev. Larry Shelton. He started Charity Baptist Church when I was a baby, and my mom, Jill Shelton, carried me on her hip and visited every house in that neighborhood inviting people to church. Dad also pastored Kennard Baptist Church, and many other churches in Indiana and Kentucky. So, yes, I am one of those PK's (preachers kids).
As a teen my activities were going skating at Gibson Arena, bowling at the Rose Bowl, watching movies at the Castle Theatre, the occasional drive up and down Broad Street during "cruising" times, playing putt putt when there was one next to Bill's Diner, shopping at Arlan's, Grant's, Becker Brothers, Sears (where my dad worked), Eaton's Grocery, Ben Franklin, Redelman's, McShurley's or B&B shoes, and going to the best fieldhouse in the world to watch basketball being played.
I have also taught some of you, and probably some of your kids as I have taught for IU East for 23 years. My classes here in New Castle were some of the very first held at the Danielson Center, and I also teach at Ivy Tech here in town and online. In addition I teach for Eastern Kentucky University, Purdue University, and South College. I was a substitute teacher for years.
I am active in 4-H with my son, who will be a ten year member next year. I have even been a 4-H leader, and I am a volunteer. I worked for Purdue Extension office here in New Castle for a while.
So, even though I work for Coldwell Banker Lingle (which if you remember the Lingle name-it was associated with a real estate company here in New Castle for years), and our office is in Richmond, when you hire me you are getting a person who knows New Castle, and knows Henry County. You are hiring your neighbor.
If you are looking to buy or sell, please give me a call. Maybe we can meet in one of our local eateries or coffee shops and even swap some memories of days gone by of New Castle, and Henry County. I am a big history buff and have a history and memories group for Henry County on Facebook.
I will look forward to hearing from you. Ellen Shelton, 765-591-3597
