Portugal may modify but keep its Golden Visa program.

Portugal will continue to issue Golden Visas but make changes to this program. The country’s Socialist Party, which holds a parliamentary majority, introduced new amendments to the “Mais Habitacao” bill. These adjustments will likely change the number of investment options available to Golden Visa applicants.

Instead of abolishing this program, Portugal plans to remove some of the investment options, including the one where people can buy real estate. Non-EU citizens wishing to obtain Portugal’s Golden Visa can still invest in scientific research, Portuguese arts, national heritage, and culture, as well as in businesses that create at least 5 jobs.

Barcelona, Madrid, and Malaga are the top 3 real estate markets for Golden Visa applicants.

International homebuyers looking to apply for Spanish Golden Visa choose to invest in real estate in Barcelona, Madrid, and Malaga. In 2022, Spain issued 476 Golden Visas, most to those who invested in real estate located in these three provinces. Non-EU citizens must purchase a property worth at least €500,000 to be eligible for the Golden Visa program.

Since launching the Golden Visa program in 2013, Spain has issued nearly 5,000 residence permits. However, recently the country has decided to change its policy regarding this program. Spain plans to either double the minimum investment required to obtain a Golden Visa or scrap this program.

Portugal launched a 4-day workweek.

This month, Portugal joined a list of countries that have embraced a four-day workweek. The county launched a six-month pilot program, which includes 46 companies and 20,000 workers. These workers will follow the 100-80-100 model: they will receive 100% pay for working 80% of the time and delivering 100% of the usual output.

Portugal's four-day workweek pilot is funded by the government. Most companies participating in this program are small businesses with up to 10 workers, and only four companies have more than 1,000 employees. In addition to funding, these companies will also receive technical and administrative support from the Portuguese government.

The Sagrada Família is one of the world’s most beloved buildings.

One of the best ways to explore a new destination is to visit some of its iconic buildings. These landmarks carry historic and cultural significance. It is hard to imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower or London without Big Ben. However, some world-famous buildings receive more positive feedback than others.

In its new study, Buildworld analyzed Twitter posts about 6,000 of the planet's most famous landmarks to find out which buildings received the most love. Osaka Castle in Japan was named the No. 1 most beloved building, followed by Ely Cathedral and Rijksmuseum. Spain’s Sagrada Família rounded up the top 10 list, with nearly 70% of tweets praising its design.

Tipping in the U.S. vs. Europe

Tipping culture varies significantly depending on where you live. In the United States, tipping is very common. Many people use it to express gratuity for various services. The recent data from the polling company, YouGov, shows that 77% of Americans who participated in the survey said they usually tip.

Restaurant tips are more modest in Europe than in the United States. Europeans tip, on average, 5% or 10%. Spanish tippers, French, and Italians are most likely to give a 5% tip. People living in the UK, Germany, Sweden, and Denmark usually tip 10%. The most common tip in the United States is 20%.
