Tucked away in southwest Atlanta’s Perkerson neighborhood, the Jeremiah S. Gilbert House stands as one of the city’s oldest surviving homes. 🏛️ Built just after the Civil War, around 1866 to 1868, this modest farmhouse offers a rare glimpse into Atlanta’s Reconstruction-era beginnings.
The home was built by Jeremiah S. Gilbert, a Civil War veteran and member of one of Fulton County’s early settler families. Constructed with fieldstone, wood, and hand-mixed mortar, the house reflects the resilience and resourcefulness required to rebuild Atlanta in the years following the war.
Today, the Jeremiah S. Gilbert House is a designated City of Atlanta Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserved as a reminder of how much of the city’s early story unfolded beyond the downtown core.
This post is part of our series Home is Here: Peach State, Big Energy, where we at celebrate the spaces, stories, and spirit that continue to shape Atlanta’s identity. 🍑
