Reflections: Thanksgiving 2016 @ The Mansion (www.ambushmag.com/ambushmansion) (Photo by Rodd Gray: Jeffrey Palmquist, Coca J Mesa, Marsha Delain, Rip Naquin, Opal Masters & Darwin Reed)
For the first time in a few years we decided to enjoy Thanksgiving with two couples we consider family, Darwin Reed and Opal Masters, and Jeff Palmquist and Coca Mesa. Like so many out there, we took out the good crystal, the Greeson silver and Marsha's Grandmother Sadie's fine china, and set a beautiful table.
A feast was in order... of course we had roasted turkey, this year preparing it with a herb lemon butter, accompanied with four giant turkey butts (Rip's favs)! ...And did it make some delicious gravy. We made Marsha's Mama Betty's oyster cornbread dressing, old fashioned thick macaroni and cheese, and egg nog - coconut fruit salad. There was a relish tray with olives, sweet gherkins, roasted artichokes and cherry peppers.
Darwin made his famous fresh cranberry sauce with pineapple and pecans, Opal's fab green bean casserole, and they brought Rip's favorite white trash rolls (brown and serve).
Jeff made his buttery mashed potatoes and Coca her famous flan, the best this side of Mexico!
The surprise of the day was the unexpected arrival of one Rodd Gray, affectionately known as Patti Le Plae Safe, the famous Miss Gay America 1995, a very close friend of Darwin and Opal from Dallas. Rodd was a delight as always and when we met him many years ago, his stories of the romantic meeting of Dar Dar, the P**n Star, and Opal Masters brings laughter to us still to this day.
The entire meal and comraderie of friendships made this the most enjoyable Thanksgiving in recent memory at Ambush Mansion.
It's important to find the things to be thankful for in this world, and friendships, old and new make it worth living...
