I worked closely with LaToya Cantrell after Hurricane Katrina to revitalize our neighborhoods. As mayor, she has proven she is still dedicated to that effort. We know that gentrification and short term rentals has pushed many long time community members out of their home neighborhoods. The City of New Orleans has just released a program that helps families stay in the neighborhood of their choice by becoming homeowners. A family of four that earns up to $50,000 annually would typically qualify for a home mortgage of about $160,000. This program will enable them to increase their budget to $225,000 in certain neighborhoods. That can make a huge difference in marginal neighborhoods. There is no down payment or closing costs. This is the most exciting program for first time home buyers I have ever seen. If you know anyone that is thinking of buying home but has not been able to save a decent down payment, this is for them. Information about targeted neighborhoods and how to participate is available.
