Pasco friends, neighbors and family,
Please for the sake of everyone that was devastated by Helene. Do not make the same mistakes as Lee county.
They flagged the non compliant homes, insurance costs soared.
The .49% is NOT the county. It is FEMA in conjunction with the county, because (for the vast majority) FEMA underwrites our flood policy. For this, the county must have TOTAL compliance with NFIP protocols.
If you do not adhere, the day will come.
If you really want to see obnoxious and ostentatious gentrification of our humble coast, go ahead, flout the rules. We’ll all be goners for the 66% increase in insurance costs.
Be patient, pull permits, be transparent. If you need help ascertaining the .49%, or if you have any questions. Please reach out.
I’m in the same situation as many of you.
We are dealing with displacement, our belongings in a heap, our homestead 4’ flood cut, with life spread out over temporary accommodation, storage and plastic tubs.
We are all learning how to overcome the obstacles to getting back home and throughly frustrated with the processes.
We are walking through the quagmire now and learning far more on it than we ever really wanted to know.
If I can be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to be in contact. I have been in NPR for nearly 20 years.
I love this coast, this fishery, these waters. It is our very lifeblood and what grounds us the most….
Funny, that. Grounded by the sea, but it could not be more profoundly so.
Keep pushing, we’ll get through this and make it to the other side strengthened by our fortitude and our sheer grit.

There was also a very comprehensive meeting at the Gulf Harbors Civic Association two nights back. It was very informative and Judi Pobst was kind enough to livestream it for the masses.

On September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian damaged or destroyed nearly every structure on Fort Myers Beach. In the months that followed, many of you entered the painful process of getting permits to repair your property. Some of you didn't. Those of you who didn't are about to feel some additional pain.
