A LONG and interesting way we came about having Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday of November ... Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Keystone Title Agency!

Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday of November because
Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November a national holiday in 1863, and later, Congress officially set the date as the fourth Thursday in November in 1941 to account for some months with five Thursdays. The date's history is tied to historical proclamations, a long-time advocacy campaign by Sarah Josepha Hale, and final legislative action to standardize the date across the nation.

Early proclamations: Early national days of thanksgiving were proclaimed by presidents like George Washington, but they varied by state, according to Mount Vernon.
Lincoln's declaration: In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November a national holiday to help unify the country.
The advocacy of Sarah Josepha Hale: For decades before Lincoln's proclamation, writer Sarah Josepha Hale campaigned tirelessly to make Thanksgiving a national holiday, advocating for it to be celebrated on the third Thursday of November.
The "Christmas shopping season" confusion: In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the date to the third Thursday of November to extend the Christmas shopping season, but not all states complied, leading to two different Thanksgiving dates being celebrated for a couple of years.
Final Congressional decision: To end the confusion, Congress passed a joint resolution on December 26, 1941, officially establishing the fourth Thursday of November as the legal federal Thanksgiving Day holiday.

We celebrate Veterans Day to honor all who served our country. Thank you to the service men and women who sacrificed. The day originated from the Armistice Day that marked the end of World War I on November 11, 1918, and now serves to honor veterans of all wars. From all of us at Keystone Title Agency, we thank you!
